My current work is an excavation of the inner world through previously unseen images of outer space. The power and mystery of recently made visible sites in the Mars landscape continue to trigger profoundly personal responses that I am still exploring.
The human eye cannot see much in space without a telescope. Now, digital cameras can bring us close to the surface of other planets. I put paint on canvas in a traditional way then layer on top of the painting an image of a far away planet made by man-made cameras. Then, I paint into the image, bringing an emotional dimension to the work.
In some ways the folds and ridges of the Martian landscape remind me of human skin.
The shadows cast into craters invite me to follow. I feel like an explorer of a new landscape that is oddly familiar.
I want to bring a high touch, human presence to the paintings so that the images captured by the non-human eye of a place very far away bring Mars impossibly near.
